John McNeil- Owner

With a love for all water-sports from an early age, John was definitely born to ride.   Currently you can find him expressing his love for all things extreme by playing with kites, and with six years under his belt, and an IKO instructor certification, he certainly isn’t a greenhorn.  
After a near fatal surfing accident, a hot second spent wrestling black bears in the Upper Peninsula, and earning a business degree from Cornerstone University, John decided it was time to take his passion for hot launches to the street and scout out the perfect location to open his very own surf shop… But first he needed a business partner… (see below).  

Get to know your local business owner: In his free time, John likes to think about what he’s going to do at work the next day and what new product to bring in… When he’s not doing any of the above, he likes to take walks with his girlfriend and think about which customers and vendors he needs to get back to, which charitable events he’s committed to, and pending agreements he needs to address with advertisers.  Sometimes he can be caught daydreaming about fully stocked stores, perfect customer service, and profits that exceed losses.  

Ben McNeil- Owner

After four years hucking three-foot cliffs on his skis at the University of Colorado and ALMOST graduating with honors, Ben immediately set out to quench his thirst for wearing red sweaters and scored an executive position at Target.   But with a passion for all things Sex Wax, surfboards over 8 feet, cruising around in wetsuits, and a masters degree in boogie boarding it didn’t take long to realize that although a valuable experience, a need for change was in the air.  Ben is stoked to be back on the lakeshore doing what he loves and can be seen around town wearing cowboy boots with board shorts, refusing to give up the small piece of the West he brought back.

Get to know your local business owner: In his free time Ben continues to work on his memoirs, where the jury is still out as far as a title is concerned.  So far possibilities include but are not limited to: “Why did I go into business with my brother?”  “Why did I go into business? Period.” “Why oh why God, do I work 100 hours a week for no pay?” and finally, “Boogie Boarding for Dummies”.

Welcome to Wet Mitten, we are Michigan's premier surf shop! The Wet Mitten Surf Shop is a locally owned Michigan based company, specializing in stand-up paddle (SUP), surf, kiteboard and skate/longboard gear. A wide variety of rental and lesson services are also available throughout the year.

Our mission is to share our love for the outdoors and water sports in particular through the promotion of stand-up paddle, surf and kiteboarding. Surrounded by a freshwater ocean and home to thousands of inland lakes and rivers, Michigan is a water sport enthusiasts paradise. If you've ever been lucky enough to surf a glassy northwest swell in Grand Haven, kitesurf Little Sable Point on a breezy south wind, stand-up paddle the pristine waters of East or West Bay in Traverse City, brave the chilly waters of Lake Superior to surf the perfect wave, or anything in between, you understand how truly unique and amazing Michigan is. Our goal at the Wet Mitten is to help make those stand-up paddle, kiteboard and surf experiences and adventures accessible to everyone through the gear that we sell and the lessons and rentals that we offer.
